Essential Elective

Beginning Design is a student-driven, project-based course that introduces students to the principles and practices of design. Through guided planning with their instructor, students select and complete original projects that demonstrate proficiency in designated course competencies. These competencies include not only the basic elements and principles of art, but also the exploration of social and historical contexts, as well as critical analysis and interpretation of art. Projects may apply to an assortment of visual communication situations and may involve one or multiple media forms. Students should expect to engage in approximately 90 hours of work, culminating in a final synthesis portfolio that showcases their growth, skills, and understanding. Depending on student interest and project choices, the purchase of some art materials may be needed. This course serves as a foundation for continued study in Intermediate and Advanced Design.
